A mural refers to a piece of graphic artwork that is directly painted or applied onto a wall, ceiling, or another enduring surface.
It can be text-based (such as a company motto or slogan, or an uplifting quote) or it might be more illustrative, using shapes, colours and imagery to make the wall look awesome.

Do you use a stencil to paint the mural?

Maybe, sometimes a stencil will be used, but more often that not, a mural artist will have developed a technique to scale up a visual they have created on a computer, or tablet, or even sketched out in a sketchbook.

Murals are normally quite large, and will make the most of a blank wall, either inside or outside of a business. Some have been painted on the side of 20 floor apartment buildings.

Why not just use a sticker or vinyl for the mural?

Accepted Answer

Murals are mainly painted onto a large, blank wall. Walls are often rough finished, and a sticker or vinyl will not stick to the rough walls for any length of time. Plus they look rubbish.

A hand painted mural will look spectacular. It will be lovingly painted by brush or spray can by an artist. An artist who wants to help you improve you business, by offering you the opportunity to use their skills to your advantage. Very few people will walk past a muralised wall without looking at it. So think of the number of extra people that large wall will help grow your business. They will look at the artwork, take in the artwork, and then look at the rest of your shop or building in a whole new light. They will be happier. They will have a smile on their face and they will remember your business.

Why paint in a shop window?

Accepted Answer

Shop windows are underused as a canvas for art, info, marketing. Drive down any High Street and look at the shop windows as you go by and you will see 10% is used for the product display, and the other 90% will probably be just dark. You might be able to make out some shapes or people inside, but very little actual good visuals is gained by the window.

So why not utilise it and paint some branding, or info or marketing into the window so when passersby look at your shop, they do take in some visuals of your store. You don't need to cover the whole window, in fact a window is the perfect way to use outlines of the shapes or text, because the blankness of the window/reflection will be the solid colour fill.

Why not use vinyl sticker in my shop window?

Accepted Answer

Vinyl stickers are great for the short term, but they will start to fade, bubble and peel away within months of application.

A sign writer will hand paint a design using some specialised paint, which is specifically made to withstand dulling, fading or peeling.

If you're looking for a long term, never-to-change design, then a sign writer will have the paint for that.
If you're looking for a shorter term, change-once-a-season design, then a sign writer will have the paint for that.
If you're looking for a interchangeable, change once-a-week, or even change-daily, then a sign writer will have the paint for that.
